Tommy was introduced as the evil green ranger. He was a new kid in town that tied in a martial arts contest with Jason. Tommy quickly mad a connection with Kimberly. Unfortunately not long after Rita put a evil spell on Tommy and made him the evil Green Ranger. He became a great  enemy of the rangers. He trapped Zordon in another dimension and humiliated the Rangers in battles. Armed with his Sword Of Darkness he was almost impossible to beat. Rita gave Tommy the Dragonzord which he could control with  his Dragon Dagger.

Once Zordon returned to normal the Rangers learned they needed to destroy the Sword of Darkness to break Rita's spell. In a one on one battle Jason was able to destroy the evil sword and return Tommy to normal. Tommy agreed to join the Rangers and use his powers for good. He quickly became a powerful ally for the Rangers. Rita would not take Tommy's betrayal lightly. She constructed a green candle to drain all of Tommy's powers. The Rangers failed to get the green candle and Tommy was forced to give his power coin to Jason to stop the power transfer to Rita. Tommy lost all of his powers and believed his Ranger days were numbered. He did however confess is love for Kimberly and the two became a couple.

Rita captured the Rangers parents and took the dragon dagger. The Rangers were forced to give up their power coins for their parents only to be double-crossed by Rita. The rangers did not give the green coin however Tommy was summoned to the Command Center. Zordon energized the green coin temporally. Tommy quickly morphed and battled Rita's forces for the power coins. Just before he lost full power Tommy leaped for the coins and was able to retrieve them ( he already had retrieved the Dragon Dagger). As he grabbed the coins a jolt of energy hit him and caused him to lose consciousness (as his powers began to fade once more). Tommy was brought back to the Command Center. Eventually Tommy awoke and found out that his powers were back for the short term. He was able to help the rangers when the day and get their parents back. Tommy continued to fight as the Green Ranger but had to use his powers sparingly.
