The teenagers were summoned to the Command Center. Their names were  Jason Scott, Kimberly Hart, Trini Kwan, Zachary Taylor, and Billy Cranston. Zordon gave each of them power coins that would enable them to become Power Rangers. The main power of these morphers were derived from ancient dinosaurs. Jason was giving the power of the Tyrannosaurus. Kimberly was giving the power o the Pterodactyl. Trini was give the power of the Saber-tooth Tiger. Billy was giving the power of the Triceratops. Each of them were  given gigantic robots called zords . Each zord  took the  form of the dinosaur each Ranger  used as a power source. When the five zords came together they formed the Megazord. Jason was a strong martial Artist. Kimberly was a gymnast and a valley girl. Trini was the smart and was  knowledgeable in the field of  martial arts. Zack was the Power Ranger with the most charisma and confidence. Billy was the nerdy Genius of the group. He was very shy but would come through when his friends needed him the most.

Zordon allowed them keep their morphers. After they left the Rangers found out that the Command Center was surrounded by desert. Rita saw  that they were Zordon's chosen group to fight her and  sent her putties after them. The Rangers tried to fight the putties and lost badly. They decided to morph like Zordon taught them. The teens  morphed  by holding up there morphers and yelling their individual dinosaur power source's names. After they morphed Alpha teleported them to downtown Angel Grove to face Goldar and the  putties there.  The Rangers started to  win their first battle when Rita made Goldar grow with her wand. The Rangers called  their new zords and instantly magically knew how to use them. They formed the Megazord for the first time. During the battle they  called the Megazord's power sword and Goldar was forced to retreat. The Rangers returned to the Command Center and decided to stay Rangers so they could defend the Earth. Over time, the Rangers mastered the ability to defeat the Putties without using their morphers, and had defeated many of Rita’s monsters using an ensemble of new weapons. The Rangers always beat Rita’s monsters, ending Rita’s evil plans. Rita eventually came up with a plan that almost destroyed the Power Rangers.

Using an evil power coin she captured a new kid in school named Tommy Oliver. She placed him under her evil spell and gave him the green power coin. He than became the evil Green Ranger. As one of his first acts, the evil Green Ranger entered the  Command Center and severely damaged it. He also destroyed the link Zordon had to the real world. Alpha Five was knocked out during the attack. The Rangers were able to find out what happened  and later went to fight the Green Ranger. But he was  too powerful for them and they lost the battle. Later Rita gave the Green Ranger a powerful evil sword (the sword of darkness) that gave him more power and made him forever trapped under her evil spell.

During an eclipse; Goldar, Scorpina( a newly returned general  to Rita's team), and the Green Ranger all grew to monster size. They  damaged the megazord severely. Rita sent each of the individual zords underground with her evil magic. The Command Center was fully  repaired by this point and the Rangers were able to  find out the Green Ranger was Tommy. Rita thinking she had won, sent the Green Ranger to Earth  with a new Dragon Dagger. The Dragon Dagger summoned the Dragonzord to attack  Angel Grove. The Power Rangers had to go fight the evil Ranger without their zords. Alpha was fortunately able to bring Zordon back and the wizard used his power to  bring the zords back. The Rangers formed the Megazord to defeat the Dragonzord.   Zordon told the Rangers that if they destroyed the sword of darkness  the evil spell on the Green Ranger  would  be broken.  The Green Ranger and Red Ranger each fought each other one on one.  In a climatic battle  Jason won and destroyed the evil sword with his blaster (when it was knocked out of Tommy's hands). The spell was broken and the Green Ranger demorphed.

Now free of Rita's spell Tommy was able to join the Power Rangers. Along with his Dragonzord he became a powerful ally. The Dragonzord gave the zords new combinations ( the Dragonzord in battle mode and the Megadragonzord). When the zord known Titanus came along the Rangers could combine all their zords together to form the Ultrazord. Tommy was powerful yet shy and felt bad about all the evil he did under Rita's evil spell. An attraction blossomed between Kimberly and Tommy around this time. Unfortunately Rita had a plan to destroy the Green Ranger forever.

The Rangers were forced to fight without Tommy for awhile. Rita then came with another plan to capture all Rangers powers. Rita put a spell on Billy and forced him to steal the Dragon Dagger. Rita abducted the Power Ranger's Parents and ransomed them for the Ranger's power coins. The Rangers reluctantly gave their coins away and were double-crossed by Rita. Their parents remained captured. Fortunately the Rangers had kept the green power coin. Tommy was summoned back to the Command Center. Zordon energized the green coin with his own energy. This was a dangerous move that Tommy agreed to despite the fact he could have died. Tommy was given his powers back temporally. After a big battle he was able to retrieve the Dragon Dagger and the power coins before his powers used up all their energy. He was shot with an surge of power from the five other power coins and was knocked out at the end of the battle. H was brought back to the Command Center.  He eventually woke up and found out his powers were now charged up for the short term( by energy from he five power coins). Tommy and the Rangers than destroyed Rita’s monster and saved all the parents.
